Few producers have been able to adapt to dance music’s evolution into the mainstream the way Armin van Buuren has. Over time, he’s maintained his A State of Trance brand through his weekly radio show, as well as touring, his annual year mix and the like. But he’s also emerged as a crossover pop artist, morphing his albums and single releases into radio-friendly tracks that, without a doubt, will evolve into his trance brand with some thorough remixing. Starting with 2013’s “This is What it Feels Like,” Armin has brought his signature talent with melody and infectious vocals to each of his singles, including his latest release, “I Need You.” Out today via his own Armada Music, the track is a collaboration with Grammy-winning songwriter Garibay, and ventures into new territory that reaches further into pop music even than his last album Embrace. A rhythmic pop venture, with vocals from Olaf Blackwood, I Need You” is laid back, soothing, pleasing all around and simply more lovable pop than house music. But, as we have learned, this will be only the first iteration we’ll see of the single, with many more interpretations to come.
