Preparing for the release of his upcoming album "Anxiety Colors," American artist Ben Enalo has shared his second single with listeners today, a hazy blend of emotions in "Bad Trips & Patterns." Enalo explains the thought process behind his new single as "coloring the canvas of a frustrated mind" and one can easily spot this upon taking a listen to the song.
At first, "Bad Trips & Patterns" feels like a shallow dive into warm waters; soft string synths, choral "oohs" and a light tapping percussion contribute to the cool, surreal coloring of the song. Before long, Enalo's vocals enter, hauntingly clear and distinct against the simplistic keyboard background. Listeners may find themselves getting lost easily in the drone of the keyboard melody pattern that floats above the song like an impending thunderstorm. The song may seem dreamlike, until after a while, it becomes clear that there is a tension in the song beyond the underlying layers of harmony; as the faint cycle of melodic keyboard notes continues, a more uneasy feeling enters the song and one may detect emotions of feeling fated to repeat a rotation of bad trips, as the name of the song suggests. Enalo takes listeners on a provoking trip meant to stir up the mind, and he successfully explores these darker fears through his new single.
