Since fronting her old band First Rate People, Toronto-based Merival is now ready to release her debut EP entitled Lovers (January 29/16) under that very moniker.
"Kicking You Out" acts as our first taste of that EP, and it happens to be the oldest song on the offering. On the topic, Anna Horvath (aka Merival) notes that "all of the songs on Lovers were written before I was 20. I wrote 'Kicking You Out' when I was 17 […] about someone I'd been in love with for 2 years already". Although never living with this mysterious "him", Horvath took the artistic liberty, with "Kicking You Out" in particular, to predict a premonition that she would "carry him" with her for "years and years after the fact" and would need to be "continually kicking him" out of her mind. According to Merival, "so far it's held true".
Delicate and stripped back in its acoustic roots, "Kicking You Out" is one of those folky slow-burners that never seem to dim in its melodic prowess.
