Afghanistan's Lord RAJA would have fit into the Brainfeeder think tank quite nicely, but since 2013 he's called Ghostly International home, serving as one of their most psychedelic, hip-hop oriented artists. While his Rubies EP and debut LP, A Constant Moth, are both nice examples of FlyLo-inspired beats, he seems to be setting a higher standard for himself on PARA, his second for Ghostly. "This is my most successful attempt at making a consistent work" he says. "This is my voice."
PARA isn't out until December 22, but "Shook" gives us a quick peek inside. Here he uses tricks we've seen from him before – repeated vocal samples, heavy bass, spacey synths – but never have they been so expertly balanced. The track evolves constantly too, inhabiting at least six different sonic environments in the span of three minutes. Stream the track below, and head to Ghostly's Soundcloud page to hear Lord RAJA's recent Corporate Takeover mix, featuring Caribou, Novelist, Pearson Sound, and more.
