Denley and Briana Marela are "Following a Lie" on new EP for Yellow Year

Lately there's been a storm of activity  from Guillermo Scott Herren, better known as Prefuse 73.  2015 has seen him return to form with three EPs and an album, so it's easy to forget that he's also co-owner of Yellow Year Records.  Still only a few years old, Yellow Year started out as an outlet for Herren's collaborations with Teebs and Machinedrum, and there's reason to believe we'll see more of that in the future.  However, In more recent months the label has been letting others shine, introducing a small handful of lesser known artists that fit snugly into the Prefuse 73 world of sound.

The most recent addition to the roster is Denley, a San Francisco-based producer with roots in the U.K.  Debuting with the Close, Within Reach EP, Denley works with a different vocalist on each of the four tracks, adapting to them all perfectly.  "Following a Lie" is the clear highlight, though, with Briana Marela's reedy, daydreamy voice floating effortlessly atop Denley's breezy production.  The track feels carefree at first, but her lyrics are full of anxiety for the future and a desperation to be free, giving the track a tragic twist.  Yes, Marela is daydreaming, of a life she can't have.  Stream "Following a Lie" below, and head to the Yellow Year Soundcloud page for the full EP.

I received my degree in English from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, and Virginia is still home. Apart from my yearly pilgrimage to Moogfest and occasional shows in DC, Detroit, and New York, I like to stick to the fringes, with an eye always open toward music that is forward-thinking and unique, whatever the genre.
