It has been a while since I have personally have heard some good instrumental progressive rock that really took me aback and made me think. That’s not to say that those bands do not exist but I personally haven’t found a band to contend with the likes of God Speed! You Black Emperor, Mars Volta or Explosions In The Sky – until recently. Meet CHON, the Prog-rock foursome based out of San Diego, CA who paints vividly beautiful and elaborating settings with the power of instrumentation. In their latest single “Story,” they are able to illustrate a narrative using frenetic double bass hits, flams and paradiddles paired with ice picking guitar riffs that would make Claudio Sanchez of Coheed and Cambria weep. They are able to capture the prolific story telling capabilities of great classical composers like Tchaikovsky and Handel with the power of the axe and hammer. This single is the first single to be released off their debut full-length ablum Grow out March 24th via Sumerian Records, preorder the album here. In addition to the albums release, CHON will be joining Circa Survive on a national tour starting March 16th.
