Our last post about Inglewood native, Thurz, was over two years ago. Since then he's been crushing it on the high and low with some of the world's premiere up & coming talent. With a healthy resume featuring hat tips from XXL and Billboard, and a spot on MTV's 2008 Best LA Breakout Artist roster, Thurz is certainly a talent waiting to break loose. Backed by Red Bull Sound Select, the former half of rap duo U-N-I made his debut album release at the month-long Red Bull 30 Days In LA festival last night. Stacked with special guests, including legendary Compton rapper DJ Quik, the show turned out better than I expected from a relatively breakthrough artist.
Upon arriving to the venue at an alarmingly early 8:45 PM, I noticed some things few shows can boast. Before me was a healthy number of audience members, super dope merch (including screen print posters made to order), and a full band setup. "Rare," I thought, as the typical hip-hop performance features nothing more than a vocalist and DJ. Red Bull was living up to their ideology of breaking music, in more ways than one. It's about damn time, too. I can only go to so many cookie-cutter shows before I cookie cut somebody myself.
The performance was dope. Thurz's Designer EP is dope. 30 Days In LA is dope. I highly recommend checking out one of the shows If you're in LA anytime this month. You can listen to the EP below, and keep your eye out for a series of short documentaries revolving around Thurz and his personal and professional life.
