A while back I was doing my regular late night trek through Soundcloud, searching far and low through recommended sounds, when I came across Australian producer Loston. It's a surprise I hadn't before, because the man has racked up over a million plays on Soundcloud with heavy stomping edits of James Blake, Sampha and Banks. He's back today with an EARMILK exclusive premiere of his new remix of "Strong" by London Grammar.
When I ran through the song for the first time this week, I chuckled at how many ways Loston distorts lead singer Hannah Reid's vocals. He builds up the track with some low notes, then drops it into a shrill cry from Reid's lungs, which instantly made me love the song and find humor in its beauty. Sounds poetic, but it was honestly a natural instinct against masterful production.
Perth repping Loston has been producing for just over a year, deviating from his homeland's bouyant musical conventions with songs he deems as "dark and emotive soundscapes." He's topped Hypem's charts before, and has assisted to both Slow Magic at Coachella and Adventure Club at Ultra. He's got the experience and the talent my world of music needs.
Take a listen to his new edit of London Grammar below, and check out more of his stuff here.
