Emotional clarity is hard to capture through computerized instruments. The digital processes that run through synthesizers and today's musicians' various programs often strip the final product of any humanistic remnants. That's where people like Guy Akimoto come in; making a digital creation seem like it has real feelings. Take his previous singles "My USB Heart" and "Ocean Love" for example, where Guy utilizes an odd talk-boxed sung vocal that sounds like a robot with real blood pumping through its wires. On his newest single – "BaeBae" – Akimoto attempts to create a similar feeling with what sounds like various Windows text-to-speech programs in lieu of his own singing, and it actually works.
As the title track for his new upcoming EP on STHWST, "BaeBae" starts off speedy with some absolutely wild jibberish, building into a funky data-laced breakbeat. The song's progression shows off Guy Akimoto's true knack for moving music into different phases, going from half-time to double-time with ease – as well as switching between digitally processed vocals and samples of real singing before you've even realized it happened. "BaeBae" then shows itself to be a true ode to finding that special someone in the confines of the web, as several nods to today's technology (logging in/out, emails, HDMI and USB cables) are mentioned by a woman who seems like the tour guide to the internet. If we had to pick our URL Bae – we'd choose Guy Akimoto every time.
