When I was 16, the first DFA artist/band that I learned about was not LCD Soundsystem, but actually a three-way tie between Shit Robot, Holy Ghost!, and Juan Maclean. I remember showing all my friends about this crazy label in New York, and blasting Shit Robot's "Take Em Up," or Juan Maclean's "Happy House" through the suburban streets of Sacramento.
Luckily, DFA has been a continuous gift that keeps giving, and their latest gift is in the form of "A Simple Design." It again brings Nancy Whang on vocals, as well as the familiar DFA drums in a neat 4×4 beat. However, their growth is imminent as this track brings forth a darker, slightly more dramatic style. Nancy similarly manages to bring out a certain "je ne sais quoi" with her vocals, and what comes around is a dance track that goes beyond their regular brilliance.
