Okay, so for those of you who may not be as hip(ster)/in the loop as some of us at EARMILK, this new track from Alt-J is allegedly just one big joke (almost sadly). In an interview with The Guardian, these boys called it “the least Alt-J song ever." "Why?" you may ask: because their label, Atlantic Records, didn't think their previous release, "Hunger of the Pine," was a big enough single. So of course, their response was to whip out "Left Hand Free" in a rumored twenty minutes.
Comprised of a "joke riff" that the band would sometimes use in practice, they decided to make a tune that maximized all of the cliché elements which seem to dictate big music. Well, I almost feel like a fool for saying it, but I absolutely love it. It's catchy, it gets me going, and playing it on the freeway with the windows down is a blast. Honestly, I could care less if it isn't some grand work of art – if this is Alt-J's bottom tier, everyone should be pissing their pants waiting for the release of their upcoming album, "This Is All Yours."
