Small Black is doing a staggered push for their new release, the Real People EP. Augmenting the liquid chillwave sound, Frankie Rose has contributed haunting background vocals. An original member of Crystal Stilts, Dum Dum Girls, and Vivian Girls, Rose has had some incredible solo albums too (notably 2012’s Interstellar).
Opening with steel drums and hushed, delayed vocals, the track bleeds into ruminative tropics. A staggered chug bass and heavy kick bounce beneath the vocal tails. Rose’s and Heyner’s voice overlay in a reverbed wash at the chorus. The bass takes a backseat, and the track becomes airborne. “Real People” is out now from Jagjaguwar.
