Not many artists get to have the chance to brand the music that comes out of their country. Especially within dance music, the Hollands and the Swedens of the world dominate with a pretty clear collective global voice. Hailing from South Africa, one could say, then, that Nate Raubenheimer is a lucky man in the fact that he gets to bring his country's music to the forefront of the world. Musically inclined since he was a kid, his technical background in sound engineering, like many other producers with that background, has brought him to a place of organic, life-breathing music, reminiscent of the anthropological name he's taken on as an artist: Protoculture. Today, he releases his artist album Music Is More Than Mathematics out on Armada, and it's one that seems to encompass a lifelong personal exploration of music. Bundling melodies that shouldn't really be encapsulated by genre, the release ventures through progressive house and trance coming from a cosmopolitan view. Featuring collaborations with Max Graham, Christian Burns and others, it's not only a study in melody, but sound as well. The title track is one that's been supported throughout the past few months by Protoculture's contemporaries, and really is the talisman of expression of music through someone with a technical training's eyes.
