Maceo Plex has always been an artist for whom I’ve had the utmost respect. In a underground techno world that can often become difficult to navigate for the average dance fan, Maceo’s style incorporates enough groove to keep you searching deeper down the rabbit hole. With iconic productions in the past months like “Galactic Cinema” and “Going Back”, the US-born, Spanish-based producer continually strikes a beautiful balance between wavy bass and melodic toplines.
After massive performances at Ultra Music Festival (amongst other Miami shows) as well as a notable introduction at Coachella, one of Maceo’s latest secret weapons finally sees a release. Putting his touch on Icelandic indie act GusGus, “Crossfade” at first glance is a brooding house tune, complimenting the band’s chorus with peaks and valleys of a kick drum. The apparent cruise control is interrupted by an earth-shaking deep synth and a few spacey sounds to boot; this is the kind that sends shivers on a festival system. If you’re lucky enough to be heading to Coachella’s second edition this weekend, get accustomed to this one before heading over to the Yuma tent.
