A weird thing happens as the seasons begin to change. Just as the leaves radiate with color and life, so do the cosmos. Shorts get shorter as smiles get wider and our spirits grow lighter. It’s that time where we leave the windows open and the tunes pumping, as we trade our folk for funk. If you’ve grown weary of the wintery deep house vibe, then strap on your keds, lace your curlz laces tight and boogie in to the night with Who Gibbz a F#@$, the latest EP from the funk daddy Gibbz. If you're picking up what he's putting down you can snag the EP for a free download over on his soundcloud or simply pick the tracks up below.
Mike Gibney, aka Gibbz, received a degree from Berklee School of Music. It is no wonder each track resonates a deeper level of production lacking from most “chart topping” singles. Carefully selected samples and filters, paired with tenor vocals all orchestrated with intricate rhythms and chord progressions send the EP soaring into the celestial heights of the springtime gods. All of the songs pair together to elate the soul, beckoning us to dawn knee highs, glitter unitards, and roller skates . . . because, it just makes sense.
Starting off the release is “Do It For You.” In this track Gibbz simplifies the melody to let his airy vocals caress and swoon through the beat. Short quarter note key strokes are accompanied by a simple kick push percussion bed. A song fit for Saturday Night Fever, “Do It For You,” Is a perfect way to immerse the listener in this funky four song EP.

Following “Do It For You,” is a ode to the woes of the road, “Again and Again.” In this track Gibbz provides his commentary of the monotony of tour life. “Again and again was originally written as a negative look at life on the road. I was starting to get sick of it. You're constantly getting messed up, the same thing every night in a different city. Meeting new people who are trying to show you the most incredible night you've ever had. It's THEIR big night, but it's you're monotony. I took some time away from the track and months later re-read the lyrics and thought, "Woah… that sounds AWESOME!"”

In the third track of the EP, Gibbz flexes his musicality with “Crafty.” Synths move in double time as Gibbz surrounds us in a euphoric cacophony of sound. You can practically feel the sunshine dripping with every down beat.

To tie everything off, Gibbz goes out with a bang (literally) with “Show You.” Show you is a song about well, bangin’ in bathroom stalls because he keeps it classy like that. Had director David O. Russel used this song during the bathroom scene of American Hustle then just maybe it would have won him that academy award for best picture.
