Jon Bellion – The Separation [Album Stream + Download]

After penning Eminem's massive Rihanna-featured hit "Monster," the multi-talented Jon Bellion is capitalizing on his building momentum with the release of his incredibly uplifting sophomore album, The Separation, a wildly entertaining spectrum of sounds and ideas that pleasantly tinkers with perspective while experimenting sonically. It is the artist's second free album following the release of his debut, Translations Through Speakers, earlier this year, but there is a very real sense of texture and a commitment to balance and symmetry that gives you the sense that he's been at this for some time now. Bellion's tranquil technique is utilized fully by the dual threat musician (he both produces and sings, and he occasionally raps, too) to create full-fledged stories, and The Separation should only help amplify his status as a masterful crafter of brilliantly human songs.

Jon Bellion is a brand of R&B that will be very palatable for pop audiences — his voice is full and present when he needs it to be, but there is a soft, silky quality that feels reminiscent of popstars past — and it would be quite shocking if his amazingly approachable music didn't land him in the spotlight sooner or later. The Separation is more or less his grand statement: he will not be bound by industry standards or be forced to conform to trendy meme culture to be successful. Early standouts include the stellar "Ungrateful Eyes," the heartfelt "2 Rocking Chairs," a wedding ballad entitled "To My Future Wife…," and the name dropping "Jim Morrison." Maryland rapper Logic contributes a stellar guest verse and newcomer Castro performs quite well in his own right. Not to mention there's a track specifically designed to pay homage to superproducers Timbaland and Pharrell. Without question, The Separation is chalked full of memorable moments.

Truth be told, there isn't a weak link anywhere to be found in this project, and it should make for some easy listening well into the new year. Don't just take my word for it, though. Be yourself; listen and form your own opinion. Does Jon Bellion hit a home run or miss the mark? Are you not entertained? Sit back, relax, and enjoy, and be on the lookout for this star-to-be in the near future.
