There is a famous saying, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." This statement is perfectly rational, but I'm pretty sure Kaytranada didn't have this in mind when he decided to edit Flume's "Holdin On". This, however, is no criticism of the Canadian beat maker. While it is true that this track never needed fixing, it doesn't mean that he ruined things either – quite the opposite. The new version feels strongly grounded in hip-hop and R&B roots, and will more than likely show up in many DJ sets to come. It's hard to know exactly what makes this version so enticing, but whatever it is, it only highlights the beauty that was the track. Working with the original creator's artistic vision instead of flipping it is a sign of a true talent.
Kaytranada has been on a real streak lately, bouncing from an amazing Boiler Room set to a recent release on Bromance Records, and now this track. He is currently touring in Europe, with a show at the famous Paris Social Club, featuring the Bromance family, coming up. The tenth release from Brodinski's label featuring Kaytranada and fellow young producer Suicideyear is out now. Flume will be in Europe come July, and seems to be stacking festival after festival.
