For his newest offering, experienced American house and garage producer Todd Edwards revamps Sam Smith's sultry R&B "Lay Me Down" into a shifting club edit. In doing so, he molds the song into the shape that many assumed it would initially take, upon learning that Disclosure were handling the production and given the success of last year's "Latch".
Edwards' mix stems from the same styles, but takes a different overall feel from Disclosure's "Latch", the song that marched Smith into the international spotlight. The vocal mix differs in that it maintains a traditional relaxing vibe where the only differentiation from the suited beat are the high tones and vibrato in the vocals, an approach that really accentuates the emotion in Smith's voice. Edwards must have taken note from singing on Daft Punk's "Face To Face", as the vocal mix maintains subtlety without sacrificing an active beat that tries to do to much underneath the weighted vocals.

Even though the "Lay Me Down" vocal mix departs from the heavy elements in Edwards' recent work, I am interested to see where Edwards goes from here.
