Depeche Mode's shadow might reach far and wide, but their descendants keep finding ways to push gloomy synth-pop into darker, tighter corners. Icelandic quartet Bloodgroup rips up the mold first set in '80s Essex, stretching Depeche Mode tension without ever breaking into the kind of chorus that sets "Enjoy the Silence" or "People Are People" alight. Equal parts muscle and machine, "Disquiet" swirls all the components of a radio hit into an uneasy brew, tracing a sinewy bassline into a cataclysmic bridge. Somehow, the band manages to concoct a mixture that's just as addictive as anything from Dave Gahan and company.
Bloodgroup is now anticipating the release of their third album Trading Echoes, due out March 11 via Sugarcane Recordings.
