Not much to say this week other than I’m spending my week in Boston, New York, and Jersey City seeking new music opportunities and artists to bring to Wobble Wednesday. There's a lot of new tunes coming down the pipeline for February, so I've thrown in a bunch of gems to grab below.
I added a new section in honor of the good reviews last week, and we have a very special mix from the man who taught me everything I know about the wibbly wobbly. As always, there are some tracks you probably haven't heard of. You’ll find a couple classics, and some artists you should become familiar with for your own benefit. Enjoy this week's tuneage knowing the weekend isn't too far away.
UK BASS
I’m not sure if this track was made entirely in one night, but Reamz claims it was made at three o’clock in the morning. It takes me back to the Mala days where everything was very low-end bubbly and each track beautifully touched each end of the register. The drop in the beginning hits really hard for UK Bass, making it a perfect track to hard cut into.

Much like the Reamz track above, Hectic’s remix of “Leviathan” also has a nice drop. The meat of it reminds of a combination between Benga’s older stuff and some of his newer lighter stuff.

Classic, bassy, sketchy. The hits are hard and the scratches are distant. Quite a nice basement track.

GRIME
I’m not really quite sure this qualifies as “grime”, per se, but it has some filthy verses from Stormin and some rowdy beats from Rednek.

FILTH
“Sleep” is one for all you metal heads. SO. F*CKING. HEAVY!

DRUM ‘N’ BASS
Last week I gave you the official release of Dub Phizix and Skittles’ “I’m A Creator”. I love the track so much that I need to give you the official video for it. As a scientist, this video really gets me going. If any of you are familiar with ferrofluids, there’s a little surprise in it for you.

Every junglist knows Shy FX and UK Apachi. Unfortunately, they don’t all know Donnie Brasco’s bootleg edit of the duo’s biggest track, “Original Nuttah”. Do yourself a favor and listen to the original one, then have a listen to this one. They are so different, but I’d even venture to say DB’s is better. That’s just me signing my death warrant, though.
Remember the days of robot farts and 56k modems? You wouldn’t have to venture very far. In fact, “Blast Off” was released earlier this week, embodying everything we love about heavy-duty stepping. It’s more of a filth track, but the speed lets it fit here.

I love perfectly mastered DnB remixes of beautiful songs (see: Black & Blue (Netsky Remix), Headlock (High Contrast Remix), and both “Twice” bootlegs, Analogue VIP and LSB). That said, this week’s cover of Seven Lions should be added to the list. Beautiful opening with a VERY heavy drop. Have a listen and let me know what you think.

TRAP
RL Grime’s rework of “Satisfaction” always puts me in a good (read: hood) mood, but this edit is up there with “Heady as Hell”. And what a great name! This track is great for a midset breakdown or if you’re looking to darken things up in your set. The last couple bars match up nicely with Eprom’s “Regis Chillbin” (also a fantastic name). In fact, even a mashup works!

I hear a lot of complaints from purist trap fans (yeah, they exist) about the evolution of the sound and how it’s taking on a heavier attitude (*cough* dubstep v. brostep *cough*). I don’t care for the hate, and I firmly agree with Madeon that, “anyone hating any genre of music simply doesn’t know the context in which it’s meant to be enjoyed.” Coinciding with this ideology, our featured Kurk Kokane & Hydraulix track is pretty bass heavy and fits nicely with a dubstep>trap set transition. I detect influences of Bassnectar as well, and you know I love that.

A trap take on a drum ‘n’ bass classic. I like it. Free DL with a Facebook like.

GLITCH HOP/FUNK
After all the great reviews of last week’s PrototypeRaptor track, I’m making the executive decision to include a section dedicated to Glitch Hop and Funky stuff. Feel free to ignore it and move along to the Mix of the Week, though you’d be quite foolish to skip this one. Straight “Essence of Mario” right here. I can picture the infamous plumber listening to it while prepping for an epic battle with Bowser.

Now, don’t hang me just yet. I know this track isn’t brand new or hot off the presses, but I need to give credit to one of, if not THE most technically talented producers in the Ableton game. ill.Gates redefined the boundaries of DAW (digital audio workstations) programs like Ableton and VST (virtual studio technology) plug-ins. “Pharma Sutra” is easily one of my favorite tracks off The ill.Methodology album. Here is a link to a free DL of remixes and more. It is also important to mention his work for all you budding producers. ill.Gates is most famous for his Ableton workshops and production lectures. Check 'em out!
