HAERTS, the latest group to make their way from Brooklyn, are pushing the musical boundaries in a borough that churns out new artists on the daily. Led by frontwoman Nini Fabi, HAERTS exhibits a sound that meets at the intersection between Americana and Indie-Pop. Despite being a new band, HAERTS' debut single “Wings” proves the band is anything but inexperienced. Fabi’s vocals, which were also a glowing point in her last band—folk ensemble NINI + BEN—evince a pure essence that sounds more like something out of Nashville than Brooklyn. Backing the enchanting vocals is the equally as strong production from HeavyRoc Music label mate St. Lucia.
One of the more striking aspects to those familiar with both Fabi's and St. Lucia's past works is how clearly those prior influences can be felt in HAERTS. Fabi's vocals embrace her folk lineage, her timbre creating an ambiance of soaring honesty. This aura is best demonstrated during a bridge in "Wings" where nothing but Nini's coos and a subdued backdrop can easily carry listeners along a drifting sonic journey. In crafting the backdrop for Fabi's vocals, St. Lucia reworked his "Tropical-Pop" style that he does best, incorporating layers of dreamy synths and funky guitar lines, all enveloped in an upbeat package.
Despite the disparity between the foundational genres, HAERTS has succeed in seamlessly fusing the musical worlds together and in doing so created a breath of fresh air among a sea where too many new bands offer up the same stale sounds.
