L-VIS 1990 – BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix

I have a crush on a label and its name is Night Slugs. Incidentally, I also have several crushes on DJs involved with this label — one particularly worthy of mention being co-founder James Connolly, alias L-VIS 1990, whose debut album Neon Dreams rocked it in 2011. It took a few days for me to find time to listen to the mix in its entirety — 2 hours is a pretty significant time chunk on a hectic weekend — but believe me, it's worth setting the time aside (and the work week is obviously the best time to sit through a 2-hour mix — this will keep you productive and also provide that hope that a world exists outside your cubicle).

L-VIS 1990 is an expert at blending a variety of styles and sounds — his album has pop listenability but also retains a strong degree of underground authenticity. His mix for BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix this past Friday puts his own tracks in the fresh context of classics new and old, letting us in on his personal influences — and resulting in something wonky and delectable. Artists featured range from Night Slugs labelmates like Bok Bok (his co-founder), Jam City, Girl Unit, and Kingdom — harbingers of a deep, dark, funky new club style — to big club names like DJ Fresh and Laurent Garnier. It's a bass-driven journey that's diverse, educational, and fun.
