Demdike Stare – Voices of Dust

Self-releasing their first tracks in 2009, Demdike Stare have already made a name for themselves in two short years as some of the most progressive thinkers in the experimental music world.  Voices of Dust, their second LP, opens with the fat, droning "Black Sun," an introductory sort of track that sets the tone for the album.

If you aren't sufficiently terrified yet, "Hashashin Chant" will probably finish what "Black Sun" started.  Demdike Stare, consisting of Sean Canty and Miles Whittaker, actually take their name from a witch ringleader named Elizabeth Southern who died in prison while awaiting trial for three murders in 1622.  The two have released mainly on the UK-based Modern Love imprint.  Demdike Stare played Mutek 2010, and definitely would have been an interesting act to catch live given what they sound like on their recordings.

I have included the first six tracks from Voices of Dust (except "Repository of Light" as the file was too large) but the whole album is really designed to be listened to all the way through.  It is a journey indeed, and I recommend it be listened to while driving through a dark forest or walking somewhere in the dead of night.  Not to mention the album art is some of the best I've seen in a long time.

Enjoy.
