Grammy Award-nominated rapper, Rick Ross gave fans an intimate performance featuring a live band and backup vocalists for NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts series. Alongside singer Elijah Blake, Ross recreated some of his hit singles including “B.M.F. (Blowin’ Money Fast)” and “Aston Martin Music.”

The band perfectly complemented Ross’ energy. Equipped with a gold throne and eclectic art in the background, the set is extravagant yet welcoming. The performance was set in the gallery space of Miami artist and Ross’ friend, Rich B. Caliente, adding to the ambiance. The rapper started with a soulful rendition of “Super High” featuring the silky vocals of Ne-Yo protégé, Troy Tyler. Once the intro of “B.M.F. (Blowin’ Money Fast)” starts, Ross finds his rhythm and instantly hypes the rest of the band.

While each track on the set list blends Ross’ trap heavy style with the simplistic design of Tiny Desk, “Aston Martin Music” and “F*ckwithmeyouknowigotit” are standout performances. Blake harmonized the choruses with a sensual charisma. Ross’ verses were effortlessly articulate and enunciated with a calm demeanor, showcasing his ability to adapt to any venue. Before his final song, “Tears of Joy,” the camera pans to a side table where his New York Times best seller, “Hurricanes” sits. The Maybach Music Group rapper wears many hats, including entrepreneur and record executive

Rap listeners know Rick Ross for his grimy gangster persona, but this special highlights his expressive talent for live performance. Despite having a DJ set, the drums, bass, and keys add depth to the rapper’s bars. Listeners would never know this is only the second time Ross has performed with a live band. His poise and contagious energy makes this 20-minute set a memorable part of NPR Music’s Black History Month.

I am a digital marketer and publicist with a passion for A&R and music management. Originally from Southern California, I spent many years as a transplant in the Midwest in the St. Louis and Chicago areas. Now I am back in sunny Los Angeles. Besides my professional life, I enjoy music of all genres with a sweet spot for hip-hop/rap. I love my west coast rap and all things Tupac, Kendrick, Nipsey, etc. I am always down to go to a show, whether the venue be the smallest hole in the wall or the largest arena.
