Electric Island 2016 puts Toronto on the international techno map [Event Review]

The August Civic Day long weekend ushered in another epic day on the Toronto Island as Paul Kalkbrenner, Gui Boratto, and fill-in Kenny Glasgow headlined Electric Island’s third instalment this summer.

Beginning with some great vibes during the warm up sets by Aaron Santos, Cosmic JD and Borzoo, Gui Boratto came on in the late afternoon to play an extended set. Guy Gerber didn’t make it to Electric Island, but Gui Boratto put on a top notch performance, moving effortlessly from minimal to house to techno, taking the crowd on the musical journey Gui is famous for, closing with his infamous "Beautiful Life", he had the audience swaying into the sunset.

As a last minute replacement for Guy Gerber, in one of the few cities that can have access to such quality international talent, Kenny Glasgow took the stage. His studio is based in Toronto and he's been spending most of his time here as of late especially, as he works on new material. As expected, the local crowd was more than up for the "replacement".

As the sun set, Paul Kalkbrenner took the reign for another extended set, . Paul never fails to impress with his live performances, and this one at Electric Island was no exception. The crowd was loving his new releases, the vibe was buoyant and the dancing harmonious. Paul surreptitiously slipped in classics like "Sky and Sand" to get the crowd lost in thought.

We look forward to the upcoming weekender finale September 4th and 5th that features two days for the first time ever at Electric Island. The Sunday event features heavyweights Green Velvet and Claude Vonstroke as Get Real, Nicole Moudaber, Bicep and Justin Martin, while the Monday indulges in the deeper sounds with the Innervisions crew coming to town. Ame and Dixon headline along with Guy J, Loco Dice, and Fatima Yamaha. The most impressive lineup we've seen to date will surely keep us satisfied as we wait for another winter to come and go before the next Electric Island season begins. For hard tickets to September 4th, 5th or both email kg@earmilk.com and secure yours without service fees.
