Detroit's Movement Electronic Music Festival, the long-running celebration of techno's birthplace, seems to raise the bar every year in terms of lineups, with this year being no exception. Who's playing? A better question would be "who isn't?" This year's list is basically a who's who of the techno and house music worlds, with hip-hop and other electronic genres also in abundance. This Memorial Day weekend (May 23-25), Detroit will come alive once again as one of the world's elite dance festivals reminds us all where techno and its descendants came from.
Just to scratch the surface, yesterday's announcement included Juan Atkins (performing under his Model 500 alias), Squarepusher, Method Man, Brodinski, Joy Orbison, and Hudson Mohawke, just to name a few. They join the likes of Maya Jane Coles, Disclosure, Recondite, and Skrillex's Dog Blood project, as well as festival regulars like Matthew Dear, Kevin Saunderson, and Carl Craig, who will play a special set with fellow Detroit native Mad Mike Banks.
