The 24-year old artist from Atlanta, Georgia, Baby Rose, has one of the most distinctive voices to rise over the last few years. We have yet to hear a voice as unique and smoky as this songwriter's since the likes of Brittany Howard or of Nina Simone. The young singer has been turning heads and growing a buzz over the past two years before she put out her debut album, To Myself.

In 2019, I discovered Baby Rose whilst listening to the highly anticipated compilation album by Dreamville, Revenge of the Dreamers III. A very peculiar voice stood out to me as I couldn't recognized who was singing. Baby Rose has a collaboration on there with Dreamville artists, Bas and Ari Lennox, called "Self Love". That feature perked my ear and caused me to turn back the clock on her young career.

Baby Rose has a project, From Dusk til Dawn, that came out in 2017 when she moved to Atlanta. She later on also placed some key features on Big K.R.I.T.'s latest record, K.R.I.T. IZ HERE and Matt Martians solo album The Last Party. This has been a pivotal year for her. All of this built up to her first at bat with her own record, To Myself.

The sultry single "Sold Out" opens up the album and was the released with two other singles "Borderline" and "Mortal". Throughout the album, Baby Rose takes her time to bare the blues of a former love. She brings forward the emotions of a breakup from the past all around the album. In the album's standout "Mortal" specifically, she says

"I'm getting weak at the thought
I'd rather get close than be farther
You know I am just a mortal
Rather be close than be far from you".

"Mortal" was produced by Matthew Suggett, also known as Insightful, who also got the chance to produce track 8, "Artifacts". The single closes the album's first half and is then followed by the introspective piano ballad, "All To Myself". Baby Rose seems to be dealing with regrets of that past relationship, and how she chooses to bottle up some feelings and expressions that may be long overdue.

She ends the album with one of the songs she self-produced, "Show You". The song highlights strong string incorporation including the descending rifts before the bridge.

The musicality of To Myself  is her own trace and identity. The artist is currently touring Europe with Snoh Aalegra as the opening act. Keep your ear out for this young songstress as she continues to carve such a unique catalog.
