Self-styled abrasive post-punk artist Nick Moon has released his latest single, “Bonfire City.”
Arriving kicking and screaming, “Bonfire City” sees Nick Moon lean more into his punk influences for the track, which is a 4-minute, 18-second fever dream that sees him whisper into the microphone about being “a cool black cat, slinking through the alley with a few lives left” and yelling “get your friends high and your enemies higher” amongst a mess of varying instrumentals and glitchy production choices.
“Bonfire City” is, in many ways, a track that sounds like two perfectly normal songs mashed together and pushed through a cheese grater, emerging as one chaotic piece that constantly threatens to go off the rails while the percussion and basslines do their best to hold everything together.
“Bonfire City” has the blueprint of Sonic Youth and the energy and abrasive qualities of Squarepusher, which really aren’t two artists you’d normally put together – but Nick Moon makes it work through sheer commitment to the bit. It’s proper dance-punk, simultaneously feeling both incorrect and completely natural.
