Philadelphia-based sibling duo Cold Court have released their new single, “Burn.”
Equal parts Aphex Twin, Mars Volta, and The Presets, “Burn” isn’t an easy song to get into. There’s so many textures and different glitching moments that on first listen, you might not even enjoy it. However, if you let yourself get into the off-kilter groove and semi-industrial nature of the track, you’ll definitely find yourself massively enjoying it.
To say that nobody is quite doing it like Cold Court might not feel right – in fact, many people are doing it like Cold Court, but few are doing it all at once, or in the same space at the same time. Made up of siblings Mini Serrano (she/her) and Jojo Lavina-Maldonado (he/him), the band pride themselves on being no-wave noisemakers and making deeply idiosyncratic music that any listener will either love or hate.
“‘Burn’ is out Frankenstein’s Monster. When Jojo moved out to go to college, we had been listening to and bonding over a lot of French house/sample-based stuff,” says Mini. “Over winter break Jojo made a beat and we freestyle over it, since then we sent remixes of the idea back and forth over email. The song became an outlet for us to be in touch with each other, and an opportunity to try and impress one another by learning Ableton and ‘producing’.”
“Burn” truly is a monster mash-up of different genres all colliding into one track, splicing together dance-punk, grunge synths, and alternate universe, half-demonic chiptunes, and Mini’s gravelly, echoing vocals, all to create a track that will definitely stick with the listener whether they want it to or not. Either way, it’s definitely worth anybody’s time, just to hear something new.
