Matt Jones & The Bobs fully leans into their journey in "Wicked Ways" [Video]

Americana band Matt Jones and The Bobs just dropped "Wicked Ways," a slow-burning ode to family, brotherhood, and the kind of grace you only earn by surviving your own mistakes.

Built on earthy guitar lines, roomy drums, and conversational vocals, “Wicked Ways” leans into the band’s roots-driven Americana while folding in a subtle ’90s alt-rock layer in the sonics. The track moves with an easy mid-tempo sway, more of a front-porch reflection than a barroom stomp, letting the lyrics sit right at the surface instead of hiding behind production. Lyrically, Jones writes from the vantage point of someone older and self-aware, looking back on the wild edges of youth without flinching or romanticizing them. Lines like, “Now that I’m older / looking back on what we did / what we’ve done / Some things we’d like, some we would take back /  Not ashamed, they live in us,” frame the song as a reckoning that’s compassionate instead of punishing, and grounded in acceptance more than regret. “Wicked Ways” is like a hymn to becoming better men without disowning who you were to get here. It slots neatly into the band’s larger narrative: Southwest Virginia kids who started a band in college, took a decade-long detour into careers and real life, then circled back to each other with more scars, more perspective, and a deeper well to write from.

The official video mirrors the song’s reflective vibe, pairing performance shots with imagery that feels like flipping through a family album. Brothers shoulder to shoulder, small-town backdrops, and moments that blur where the band ends and lifelong friends begin fill the frame. It fully leans into authenticity, extending the sense of “looking back without shame” into the visuals.

Channeling the spirit of Americana acts like The Avett Brothers and Old Crow Medicine Show, the songwriting honesty of John Prine and Jackson Browne, and the enduring folk-rock legacy of The Band and Tom Petty, the band merges emotional storytelling with the ’90s alt-rock and pop sounds they grew up on. Their latest single, “You Stood Still,” crossed 100,000 plays within a month of release.
