Jenn Wasner, better known under her solo alias Flock of Dimes, releases “Defeat,” which is one of her most arresting songs to date.
The track arrives ahead of her forthcoming Sub Pop album The Life You Save (out October 10), and it’s a glittering showcase of Wasner’s ability to transform private reckoning into a kind of communal catharsis.
From its opening notes alone, the song feels like it hovers between worlds.
Wasner’s voice is both hushed and resolute, and carries a weight of resignation while simultaneously glowing in the light of acceptance.
The production is spacious yet intimate. Synths swirl around her like electric currents, while the subtle rhythmic pulse grounds the track, anchoring its expansiveness to the earth. Melodies ebb and flow, blooming and suddenly clearing any emotional fog.
“Defeat” is the sound of surrender that isn’t about giving up but more about stepping aside to breathe again.
It continues to weave Wasner’s long-standing tension between fragility and power, echoing the intimacy of her previous solo album Head of Roses while signaling the deeper excavation of The Life You Save. It’s a fragile hymn that still manages to tower, small but without feeling diminished in any way.
