Indie-pop artist Your Smith (aka Caroline Smith) has released her long-awaited new album The Rub.
Written and recorded with Jake Luppen and Nathan Stocker of Hippo Campus at Minnesota’s Pachyderm Studios, the album release coincides with the release of the video for the single “Mr Revival”.
Your Smith said: “It’s a song about rebirth and facing the final boss of yourself, and it feels even more apropos now that I’m going through an even bigger revival in my career. A big part of making this record was figuring out how music could coexist with this new life I’d created”.
Having taken some time out from music to start a family and go to college in her 30s, the Minnesotan Smith sees both the new album and new single as the “revival” of her songwriting career.
An upbeat look at creative life and the ongoing process of working out who Your Smith is as a person, The Rub effectively deploys the signature Hippo Campus bouncy jangliness with Your Smith’s own more mature, measured evolution as a songwriter.
The result is a true portrait of someone who’s found their place as a working artist and mother, who has also learned to make art the way she wants, regardless of what others expect from her. As Your Smith sings on track “Little Highways”, “it’s you and me baby/one day at a time”.
