In her follow up since 2024's Blush EP, Mexico City based artist Girl Ultra taps in Empress Of & Chromeo for her continued conquest of the electronica sound.
It's been a little under a year since Girl Ultra released her EP Blush, honing in on her sharpened electronic melodies and knack for writing over moody tempos, and a little over three years since her album El Sur which demonstrated her commitment to generating her own personal style within the genre. "'Tomas" is the latest from the singer and brings a little more pop sensibility through a funkier, bounce powered groove provided by Chromeo, who Ultra is crafting an album with.
On the upcoming collaboration, Ultra defined it as a "dream."
"Working with Chromeo felt like fulfilling a teenage dream. Growing up on the edges of the indie sleaze era in Mexico City, I was deeply immersed in it. At 15, I used to save up to see Chromeo live, but I always dreamed of experiencing the bloghouse sound from a different perspective—beyond just being part of the audience."
"'Tomas" comes with a fun video, featuring the lead singer on the record, Empress of who provides most of the energy for the lively track.
