Sasha Dawe finds light in the rearview with folk-fueled gem “Because We Forgot”

Sasha Dawe's newly released single, “Because We Forgot,” is radiant enough to ride to, from the depths of our souls, on a story of meaning and memory. As the first track off Dawe’s EP, the song provides a glowing introduction to his sound, a spirited combination of modern folk and timeworn storytelling that’s like a warm breeze through the pages of an old journal.

The video draws you into Dawe’s world from the first frame with its unassuming charms and natural textures. It is a fitting visual grounding for a song that feels intimately personal yet broadly relatable. With one skipping guitar line and percussive pulse after another, “Because We Forgot” has a buoyancy that never feels forced. Instead, it elevates you, gently, like the memories of a road trip with no exact place to go, only the lessons you collect in the rearview.

What makes this track work is its balance of introspection and celebration. Dawe imbues the song with the emotive storytelling of John Martyn and borrows a bit of Dawes’ melodic fluidity, making it sound timeless yet fresh. His singing glides over ripe, lush instrumentation, while playful backing harmonies drift past like snippets of conversations with old friends never seen again. There’s joy here, but a joy that has been earned, which arrives only after some learning, some forgetting, some remembering.

“Because We Forgot” is a tender reminder that wandering sometimes leads to seeing what we’ve lost sight of. The message comes across even more strongly in the music video’s intimate, earthy aesthetic, which conveys the idea of returning with eyes a little wiser and a heart a little more buoyant.

With his artistic pen, Dawe has an exceptional knack for turning life’s wayward paths into heartfelt lyrics. “Because We Forgot” croons quietly and proudly with an insouciance that lingers after the last note has rung out. For admirers of reflective folk with a touch of adventure, this one is worth a spin and repeat spin or two.
