Inflected with Sims 2 overworld loops and bright, melodic guitars, “Upstate Anthem” is an ode from anyone who grew up in a small town, to the feeling of not quite feeling at home in it anymore.
The lyrics once seemed so big, this little town / what’s left keeping everyone else around? really encapsulate the sense of loss many people feel at seeking comfort in something that doesn’t work anymore. Meanwhile, what happens upstate / stays upstate really brings home the disconnect many people find between where they’re from and the place they left home for.
