Surprise Baby is the musical moniker of Los Angeles-based artist Sarsten Noice and producer Claire Morison. Together, they create music which they have hailed as “rock and roll cowboy meets indie pop” and their latest single “Poison the Well” falls into that category.
“Poison the Well” is the first song to be released from the upcoming EP, and touches on the painfully relatable theme of coming to terms with your actions and trying to be at peace with the fact that we cannot always alter the outcome of certain situations. Emitting a haunting ambience, the track sonically reflects that stomach-churning feeling you have when you anxiously wait for something that is out of your hands to play out in front of you. The song gradually intensifies with swirling synths, intricate layers and ethereal harmonies, creating a hypnotic release.
Speaking further on the meaning behind the song, Noice shares, “At the time, I was involved with someone who was in another relationship and we were both a part of a tight-knit community (“the well”). At a certain point, it appeared to me that the toxicity of the relationship had permeated our ability to operate in our social scene without causing disruption to our lives and those around us. I was faced with confronting the morality of my own actions as well as some heartbreak because I knew I was never going to be able to fully be with this person.”
“Poison The Well” is an impressive entrance to the upcoming EP, and gives us a taste of what is yet to come.
