There’s a new up-and-coming voice in neo-soul and she goes by the name of criibaby. The Bay Area native has officially made her mark with a debut solo single entitled “Sunshine”—a tune that stands out with its infectious beat, outstanding musicality, and a refreshingly inclusive message of love.
As a queer artist and champion of LGBTQ rights, criibaby made a concerted effort on “Sunshine” to provide an alternative to the heteronormativity that surrounds Valentine’s Day with a theme that love is truly for everyone. The song follows her personal experience of falling in love with another woman for the first time, but the neutral narrative voice and undeniable sweetness make it applicable to any love story imaginable. While this all-embracing lyrical approach and her bouncy vocal delivery are the focal points of the track, the backing music does not disappoint, featuring a funky beat and punchy bass lines that are guaranteed to get heads nodding along.
