Manchester six-strong soul collective Pieces of a Man recently released their debut album Made In Pieces. Today they share their sophomore single "Listen" alongside its live visual performance. The track is a nice blend of neo-soul, funk, and jazz, all meshed together by a deep infectious groove. The record deals with the delicate topic of communication, and was birthed by frontman/synth/talk boxer To!u A¡ayi's personal struggle of coming out to his mother. In summary, he says it didn't go smoothly but they finally got through it.
Born out of the emerging soul scene in Manchester, Pieces of a Man are by no means a local act, with influences stretching across the globe and deep into the musical archives, from gospel and choral soundscapes to neo-soul and French house. Raised on a strict musical diet of redemption hymnal, gospel, and Ron Kenoly, mixed with D’Angelo, Dwele, and Jill Scott, Pieces of a Man electronically manipulate and push the sonic boundaries of a conventional soul band. Together they create an immersive, textured sound, built with hip-hop, funk, and neo-soul soundscapes.
