Mija’s first rule to creating awesome music is “fk a genre” – unless the fact that she recently curated the ‘FK A GENRE’ tour and her Facebook’s ‘About’ section have little bearing on her theories of music composition, which would be fair, but still. So it should be no shocker when the artist known personally as Amber Giles kicks 2017 off with a drum’n’bass cut, but a first listen to “Secrets” still solicits the delight of a surprise.
The uplifting track, released as a free download on her main Soundcloud page as well as on her still new-ish label’s, Never B Alone, is totally nostalgic for mid-2000s d’n’b along the lines of Netsky and Sub Focus. Although Mija isn’t exactly known for drum’n’bass, it’s easy to imagine her dropping this cut in every one of her upcoming mixes, as it’s just as hyper (without being quite poppy) as the rest of her repertoire.
Featuring Tegan & Sara’s vocals from 2016’s “Boyfriend,” it’s especially reminiscent of everything Nero has ever done, especially since the Canadian duo shares Alana Watson’s pitch. Apparently, Mija was using the acapella version of “Boyfriend” as a placeholder, but as the creative process often goes, the sample stuck and luckily for us Tegan & Sara gave the producer permission to use it.
According to a press statement, there’s “more music and announcements from Mija coming shortly.” The Phoenix, Arizona native has had her hand in everything from house to happy hardcore since she became a household name with the help of OWSLA awhile back, so your guess is as good as ours regarding what to expect.
