Usually when you think of Black Moth Super Rainbow, Tom Fec, or his solo project Tobacco, sleazy beats and fuzzed-out production come to mind. Ultima II Massage debuted a couple of months ago as the wonderfully grotesque follow up to 2010’s Maniac Meat. The album is pretty ugly (in a good way), but Tobacco has his tender moments.
San Diego’s High Tides cuts through the edge of leading single “Eruption (Gonna Get My Hair Cut at the End of the Summer)” to get to some smooth, laid back synth waves. The hazy 80s glow and endearing chord progressions leave me wanting more from the relatively unknown High Tides. He has (or perhaps, they have) only released a few original tracks and a Black Moth Super Rainbow remix that I could find. Maybe this will be the start of more good things to come from High Tides this year.
