Indie folk outfit Elephant Revival rounds out their spring tour tonight at Joe’s Pub in NYC, and you're invited to what's sure to be an intimate yet epic finale. The Colorado-based quintet will be supporting their new album These Changing Skies – a cornucopia of multi-instrumental offerings (everything from banjos to fiddles to washboards) woven together seamlessly by soaring Americana melodies, effortless harmonies, a cinematic drama akin to Lost in the Trees and a buoyant energy a la Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes.
The album feels like it could have been born from a covered wagon on the Oregon Trail, with a familiarity and drama of the transient past reincarnate. But even though the tracks feel well traveled, the music is grounded in the group’s burgeoning talent that bursts at the seams of the songs, hardly able to be contained into notes and chords and lyrics. Like a bottle of music shaken up and slowly released, the soft-spoken singing radiates a steady energy – and a power that we can't wait to see translated to a small dinner theater stage.
“Birds and Stars” is a gorgeous story and standout song, filled to the brim with the band’s signature solid male/female harmonies and a fiddle finale that feels like free-falling, a fleeting moment, or taking flight.
