BLU J adds some zest to Tritonal’s “Now or Never” [Premiere]

Tritonal's "Now or Never," as wonderful as it is, is filled with dance music cliches: the slow build, the airy female vocals, the heavy drop characterized by metronome-like bass — you're 1:44 in before you're even dancing. Upon a first listen it's good, but it needs something more. BLU J, a duo comprised of San Francisco natives Alex Blue and Jay Wiltzen (hence the name, get it?), took it upon themselves to add a new feel to the track, and boy are we thankful they did. EARMILK is proud to premiere BLU J's captivating reinterpretation of "Now or Never," which explores far more scintillating territory deep in the realms of dance and bass.

BLU J categorizes themselves as "forward thinking bass music," and it is very difficult to argue that assessment upon a first listen of their "Now or Never" remix. It's simply mystifying. Unlike Tritonal's version, which takes forever to climax and gets pedestrian at times, BLU J's vision for "Now or Never" is constantly kinetic. It moves and shifts persistently, continuously changing. Phoebe Ryan's sweet vocals are chopped expertly in a number of different ways, which only adds to the magic. The most fantastic of these distortions comes near the 3-minute mark when the duo warps and transfigures Ryan's voice to match the tidal wave bass breakdown littered with intricate drum programming. This isn't traditional electronic music; this is something deeper.
