After releasing a flurry of tracks earlier this year, we could barely keep up with John Dahlbäck's production run in 2013. A list that included rave-ready tracks such as “Cobra”, “Kremlin” and “Comet”, Dahlbäck’s year has included heavier, lyricless experiments that turn electro house sounds on their head. It’s a departure from the warm, progressive vibes from releases like “Life” as well as earlier remixes that helped establish his sound, such as Sneaky Sound System’s “Big” and Skylar Grey’s “Invisible.”
Dahlbäck’s latest release is a happy marriage of sounds old and new. “We Were Gods” features Lucas Nord and Urban Cone, and while the breakdown leads on an uplifting, softer brand of progressive house, the chorus pulls in more growling electro basslines and wobbles than a listener might expect. At the same time, it’s certainly not as off-the-wall as some of his more recent productions. In any case, it’s another notch in the belt for the Swedish producer, perfect for the middle to end of any DJ set that’s not handcuffed to one single sound.
