Kidsuke is an extremely new duo consisting of Japan's respected experimental producer Daisuke Tanabe and the U.K.'s highly praised beatsmith Kidkanevil. It's the Far East meets the West in this ambitious project to combine each others' skills into one boundary-pushing project. When we first discovered about this newly formed partnership, we couldn't help but be intrigued.
Tanabe is an outstanding producer, pushing the limits of electronic music and beyond. It's a shame that the Western cultures don't have more exposure to contemporary music in the East, especially in Japan and China. We think of him highly in respects to his strengths to his game, which can be most compared similarly to Four Tet in a sense. Kidkanevil may ring a bell for more of you listeners. His style is more closely associated with experimental trip-hop and electronica, though a lot of his works tend to be all over the place within those two styles. Two outstanding and extremely creative producers coming together. What more can you ask for?
Kidsuke is the combination of these two experimental producers, which recently led to the release of one of their latest single "Tiny Concrete Block". This track is one of the most engaging and contrasting works we have stumbled upon in a long time. First thing's first: turn up your bass. But don't be fooled by the lighthearted bells in the beginning, because soon after enters a dirty, droning-yet-pulsating bass in the background. Strongly distorted effects are introduced in the midst of the medley which represents the introduction of contrasting pitches and sounds that layer the track in a way that hasn't been heard in a very long time. Just when you think they couldn't possibly add more, they in fact do. In the latter half of the song, they introduce a looped effect that almost sounds like an awkward yell and a mellow, ambient synth. I know, you may be thinking, "what the hell" when you first listen to this part of the song. Give it another few seconds to really sink and you'll soon realize that it works beautifully.
