Rising London-based pop artist Niki Kini taps into duality and labels on her debut EP Sugar & Spice, a five-track collection rooted in genre-bending instrumentals and confident delivery.
From the sultry notes of "All Things Nice," to the anthemic sensibilities of "Done Me Wrong," the EP spans R&B, disco and funk underpinned by her addictive pop signature. Exploring the common misconceptions of being labelled too kind, too polite, too sweet, the project weaves through sweetness and ferocity in equal parts as her smooth vocals and thoughtful lyrical approach invites us into a luscious sonic world.
Lead track "Murder You," with its seamless blend of vulnerability in love and shimmery, disco-led groove juxtaposes the cheeky humour of "God's Hitlist," with its relatable reflection of how things just seem to go wrong in life. Empowering, carefree and introspective in perfect turns, the EP is all about taking the power back and letting go of things you can't control.
Speaking of the EP, Niki says, “I’ve always been a very glass half full kind of person and so, I always look for the humour or the silver lining in situations – I think you definitely hear this in the songs on the EP too. The song can be about facing racist hate and I throw in a joke saying ‘they’re beefing ‘cause I’m Asian, I don’t even eat beef’. There’s a lot of moments like this in the EP and I think it’s really just an extension of my character & personality.”
Rooted in different sonics and different energies across five tracks, the EP showcases Niki's versatility as she establishes herself a pop talent worth keeping on your radar. With a EP launch party on 9th May at The Courtyard, Hoxton, set to encapsulate the sweet yet spicy vibe of the project, Niki Kini brings girl power to the forefront with her enchanting musicality.
