Alternative artist Kim McClay has released her new single “Velveteen Girls,” and it’s a callback to all of your favorite 90s girl groups. The track is the first off of McClay’s upcoming EP, Worth It, set to release later this summer and explore topics of sexism, democracy, and all things feminine rage.
The track, getting its name from the book, The Velveteen Rabbit, looks back onto McClay’s childhood and asks the questions that have followed her since: “A pretty face, pretty girl/ Is that all that I am to you?” In the sonic vein of 90s Riot Grrrl, “Velveteen Girls” combines all of the smaller and more quiet elements of womanhood: bonding over books and childhood experiences, and all of the anger that comes with being underestimated. In just three minutes, the track gives a clear insight into McClay’s style and intension for her upcoming EP: loud, strong, and perfectly feminine, showcasing a 90s, alt-pop sound and a voice and personality you’ll want to come back to.
“Velveteen Girls” is danceable, fun, and relatable in its anger all at the same time. McClay performs a perfectly fitting expression of current feminine rage with the edge of messy rock and childhood nostalgia, creating a sound that is easy to scream to.
“Velveteen Girls” is available for download everywhere today, April 10th.
