Emerging UK artist Iona Luke has released her new single, “Existential”.
An up-and-coming voice within the UK alternative scene, Iona Luke’s “Existential” has more than a tinge of Pixies-era alternative rock about it, but with added emotionality in the vocals.
“In a madly oversaturated music space, figuring out where you stand and what you have to say is scary stuff,” says Ioan Luke. “When I had to decide whether I’d be Iona or Iona Luke, I repeated my name in my head too many times and had the mini existential collapse we all get when a word suddenly looks a bit funny. This song is about identity, overthinking, and wondering if what you do matters, actually. It was almost impossible to write…snapped a lot of pencils.”
All that turbulence was worth it because “Existential” feels refreshing in its honesty and its use of swelling instrumentals to really create a sense of background noise as the song goes on, much like going through your own existential crisis. “Existential” is cathartic and comforting in its darkness, and Iona Luke’s vocals are really something special just on their own.
