As Emma Harner shares her debut album, Evening Star, she opens with “Woman of the Hour.” This haunting track serves as commentary on perceiving the darker side of a beloved individual.
Recognized for her math rock approach, Harner opens with inviting guitar arpeggios and stunning vocals that play with the metre.
“Now you blame it all on this, Pieces Scorpio moon / Everyone understanding the hero in the room.”
With a flourish of strings and a cascading melodic line, Harner builds tension that leads to a release. Soft keyboard percussion breaks the tension as dissonant chords and arpeggiated guitar swarm to replace it.
“You kid, you jest, And save the face.”
Distorted vocals and hints of pitched strings build to a resolve that soothes the listener. The opening lyrics repeat again, paired with vocal harmonies. The lyrics are met with a buzz that hangs over, imitating the feeling of seething emotions.
