There’s something quietly addictive about “Wishful thinking,” the latest release from Meli Foster-Turner. Coming out of the UK, Foster-Turner is still early in her release run, but this track already feels like a step up. It’s a bit more upbeat than her previous singles, but not in a way that detracts from the emotion. If anything, that contrast makes the lyrics hit harder.
The whole song circles around the feeling of wanting something to last while also half-expecting it to fall apart. Lines like “Maybe I’m just not made for love” feel uncomfortably honest, like a thought you try not to say out loud. Then you get the hook repeating “I guess it’s wishful thinking,” and it sticks in your head for hours.
The standout moment is easily when she sings “Roses, angels, whisper in my ear / Devils, takers, frame me in the mirror.” It’s specific enough to stick, and it captures that internal conflict really well. You can picture exactly what she means without her spelling it out.
What stands out most is how raw and candid it all is. The song doesn’t try to dress things up or tie everything together neatly, and that honesty is what makes it believable. If this is the direction she’s heading in for her upcoming EP, it will be well worth a listen when it arrives this spring.
