Bay Area native and R&B artist Satya explores the emotional turmoil in life’s low moments in her latest single, “Project 10.”
The 25-year-old singer blends R&B, soul, jazz, and folk while singing about dealing with deep, overwhelming emotions and learning to stay grounded. Satya makes it clear that when she’s stuck in her head, she could use a hand to hold with lyrics, “Floating so high. I’m scared to look down. Who's gonna hold my hand when I hit the ground? When I’m stuck in my head. Deep as the sea, dark as the night.”
In the depressing moments, Satya would rather disappear and process what she’s feeling.
This song was supposed to be kept to herself, but eventually Satya decided to share it to the world. “[Project 10] was unnamed on my logic file, and it was like this random song that's gonna just be for me, but the more I just kept, like, picking it up and working on it, I really fell in love with it. And it just always felt like that wasn't even the song, it was just a project,” Satya said.
"Project 10" is the first on the tracklist for Satya’s upcoming album Yellow House, set to release June 5. The album reflects on the impact of her childhood and trauma and is named after her childhood home.
Satya comes from a musical family and was a student at the Oakland School For The Arts, the same school many other talented celebrities attended, including Kehlani, Zendaya, and the recent Olympic gold medalist Alysa Liu.
“[Oakland School For The Arts] is really a magical school,” Satya said.
Most of the songs on the upcoming album, including Project 10 were written during the pandemic, and Satya touches on remaining hopeful when it feels like the walls are closing in.
